Good post and I agree with your perspective in many respects.

I personally am excited about Phelps because I've been trying to get my son interested in a sport I think he'd be pretty good at, and he's gotten very excited about what Phelps is doing.

Also, the fact that he's broken several records and gotten so many medals in his sport is a great accomplishment, and the fact that he and the rest of the U.S.A. swim team are just so fantastic in what they are doing makes a lot of people excited and proud of the accomplishments of our athletes in a time when America needs a shot of pride in the arm very much like Jim Braddock did during the Great Depression with boxing... Braddock is not necessarily the first name that comes up when you mention boxing greats, but even now his story inspires and makes the nation proud to have had him in the ring when we did.

Michael Phelps and the U.S.A. swim team also seems to be giving the nation a much needed shot of some national pride.

Michael Phelps is, without a doubt, the face of his sport just like Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Muhammad Ali, Brett Favre, Roger Federer and Babe Ruth. However, for all that he accomplished in this years Olympic games, I still don’t think he ranks in the top 5 of all-time Olympians.

Here is my TOP 5 All-Time Olympians:
