Two elderly Chinese women who applied during the Olympic Games to protest the loss of their homes have been ordered to spend a year in a labor camp, a relative said Wednesday, as more foreign activists were detained.
The women were still at home three days after being officially notified they would have to serve a yearlong term of reeducation through labor, but were under surveillance by a neighborhood watch group, said Li Xuehui, the son of one of the women…

As of Saturday, August 16th, even with all the underage gymnasts and bronze-throwing tantrums, the U.S.A. individual athletes and teams outstrips the field in total number of medals won at this years Olympic Games. With 57 medals under our belts, I wonder about the chances of China, with 49 total medals, catching up with us anytime soon. Even if they do, it will still be difficult to outshine the huge wins for the amazing U.S. swim team, with Michael Phelps surpassing Spitz’s record gold medal wins for any one set of games. That is one of those feats that will go down in history as the new record to beat – Good luck with that.
Here is the FULL MEDAL COUNT as of latest report.
And boy, those wikipedia geeks are really on top of things…

Dara Torres hit the wall just a split second after Britta Steffen of Germany. Not bad for a 41 year old mommy of a two year old swimming against a 24 year old AND a 16 year old.

Talk about cutting it close. Michael Phelps won his 7th gold medal of the 2008 Olympics by a mere sliver. How does he DO it?? Maybe it’s the 12,000 calories per day he consumes to keep up his energy.
Congrats Michael! I hope you win a dozen more.

Phelps wins 10th, 11th golds of Olympic career
By PAUL NEWBERRY, AP National Writer
BEIJING (AP)—A daily double. Michael Phelps swam into history as the winningest Olympic athlete ever with his 10th and 11th career gold medals—and five world records in five events at the Beijing Games.
A day after etching his name alongside Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis with gold No. 9, Phelps set a standard all his own when he won the 200-meter butterfly Wednesday morning. An hour later, he swam the leadoff of a runaway victory by the U.S. 800 freestyle relay team, which shattered the old world mark by more than four seconds…
